The lace of these dresses (was/were) handmade. a. was b. were
what do you think th subject of this sentence is ?
If it is a single subject, then it needs a single verb (was) If it is a plural subject, then it needs a plural verb (were) So what is the subject ?
lace?
right....and lace is a singular subject, so you need a singular verb, which is was. The lace was handmade. " of these dresses " is an adjective phrase. It has nothing to do with the verb.
can u give me more hints to help me find this out?
well....first you have to find the subject of the sentence..... The dog was/were brown. Dog is singular so the verb has to be singular. The dog WAS brown. There are some rules that you should learn....this would make it much easier. For instance, when the subject of the sentence is composed of two or more nouns or pronouns connected by " and " . use a plural verb. She and her friends are/is at the fair. correct form is : She and her friends ARE at the fair. There are several websites that explain the rules...you should check them out... http://leo.stcloudstate.edu/grammar/subverag.html http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/599/01/ http://www.grammarbook.com/grammar/subjectVerbAgree.asp
