Let f(x) = 8x^3 – 28x + 61 and g(x) = 2x + 5. Find f(x)/g(x)

OpenStudy (phi):

the answer is (8x^3 – 28x + 61)/ (2x+5) this might simplify. divide 2x+5 into the top and it might go in evenly

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

That's just \[\frac{f(x)}{g(x)} = \frac{8x^3-28x+61}{2x+5}\]Unfortunately the top is irreducible, so you can't simplify it further.

OpenStudy (phi):

remember f(x) is just a short name for 8x^3 – 28x + 61 and g(x) is short-hand for 2x+5 so f(x)/g(x) is short-hand for what I posted up above.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

61 isn't a multiple of 5, so the division won't come out evenly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya but i need it with the remainder

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Okay, then do the division and find the remainder.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i tried but somehow im not getting the right answer
