NEED HELP! WILL REWARD MEDAL!!!!!!!! Choose one of the quotations presented in the slideshow that captures your thoughts about power. Reflect on what the quotation says about power, life, relationships, or humanity. You might discuss how the quotation portrays power and how you see power. Reflect on what the quotation reminds you of, how it illuminates a problem with power that you have seen in the world, or how it relates to your experiences.
I picked the M.Ali one- “Only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the extra ounce of power it takes to win when the match is even.”
@ganeshie8
Your reflection should be 250 words or more (approximately one double-spaced page), written in complete sentences, and logically organized. It is a personal piece of writing and should have your voice in it. Use any of the quotations from the slideshow or locate one of your own as a starting place for your reflection. Agree, disagree, rant or rave, ask questions, and make connections to your world.
And what is your question in all of this?
I need to write a paragraph that reflects that M.Ali quote in my own voice. But I don't know where to start. Anybody else that can help me!? :'(
@e.mccormick
Well, it seems pretty open ended: "Agree, disagree, rant or rave, ask questions, and make connections to your world." This is basically 250+ words of your thoughts on this topic.
Hmmm.... well, okay I'll try it. :)
But how would I say this in my own point of view? I'm kinda confused here. :/
Muhammad Ali was a boxer, a very good boxer. There is some context here. He is talking about a regulated competition between two well matched people. So, you had any moment in your life where you were competing against others that were basically the same as you?
I may not know any of the people that were the same as his opponents. But okay, that's a a great start off!
Or, you could take the disagree stance and put forward the idea that there is no such thing as two evenly matched people. That would be based on the fact we are all individuals and while we may be similar, we are not the same. Pick some viewpoint like how it is similar to your life or different from your life or a mix of both and run with it! That is what they are asking for.
Okay :)
I think I agree that there are two evenly matched people. It's just that it depends on who your opponent is. Maybe he's not even or maybe he could be tough. It just depends on how we act. Is this okay?
I know, I need more words. XD
If you agree with the statement, support it. If you disagree, attack it. If you are unsure, talk about how it does at times match your life and at other times not match your life. Any of those would be a personal point of view and be valid here. It is just a few options, which is good. Don't want too many options. Just two or three that make sense as starting points. Explore them, make some notes, and then see which you like the best. That will be the one you can probably write the most about, which will make getting 250 words easier. And 250 words is two to four paragraphs, depending on how long they are. It is not a huge volume of text. If you think about say two things as examples of what you choose as a topic, explain briefly why you chose those two things, and then summarize what it means to you, I bet you will have more than 250 words!
I was typing in another window... let me look at that.
Hmmm..... how would I extend this to 250 or more? That's all I can think of and also that's the main part that reflects the quote, right? So, I think I'll go with a little more since you told me that I completely agree with the statement I just made.
"I think I agree that there are two evenly matched people." Instead of are, how about can be. First, it leads into the next line better. Second, it is two words so it helps the word count. "Maybe he's not even or maybe he could be tough." This needs some sort of frame of reference. Say it out loud and see if that sentence makes sense to you. "It just depends on how we act. " This is OK as long as it leads to an explanation of that next.
I ran out of ideas and thoughts. :P
Well, what do you mean by "Maybe he's not even or maybe he could be tough." ?
It could depend on how your opponent is. I mean, he could go easy on you or be a tough expert, right? So, since this perfectly reflects the quote that M.Ali made, I agree that there are two evenly matched people. Talking about two evenly matched people, it also depends on how YOU act. Maybe you need to go easy or tough on your opponent, considering that there might be even chances between one another. Is that great!? :D
A perfect match means that you are trying your hardest and they are trying their hardest and neither of you are winning. So what becomes the tipping point? How does this change from a tie to a win? That is what Ali is talking about. How to decide a winner when two people are so close in skill that skill alone can not decide it.
Even though you're knocked out, you could still come back up and put forth out your even chances and still defeat him, no matter if he's tough or not. Because all about winning is never give up.
How to decide a winner if it's really a close match? Well, I think I believe that you must be stronger than your opponent to win. But then, this will result into a no-even match. Both of us won't have even skills. Then it must be a non even match.
What Ali is saying is that it is an even match, but if one of the people has lost, that will add heart to skill. They will know the shame of defeat and not want that. Their will, their drive to not experience that again, will give them an edge.
So think of a time when you were not good enough to do something you wanted to do. Like a video game. People lose in games all the time. But they keep playing, keep getting better. However, there are many losses involved in getting better. So why do they do it if they lose?
So, what he's saying is that if his opponent almost has the same skills as himself (Ali) then, he must never give up and keep on trying, right?
They keep on trying until they have it?
Not just never give up, but also the fact that loss generates a desire to win.
Like for example, my brother plays Super Smash Bros. Melee and selecting Adventure mode on Very Hard, he always loses, but keeps on trying and never gives up. He still wants to complete the whole thing.
True, back to the Ali quote, what more would I have to add if the match were close to an even win. I mean if two people had the same skills, it would result to a tie, right?
Unless one of them is stronger than the other then he would have that likely win right?
Let me talk about an uneven match for a minute. I played soccer as a teen. There was this one team that had a bad reputation. They stunk. First time we played them, it was early in the season. We rolled over them. We ended up being the #2 team in this part of the state, taking the local championship and losing only once in the regional to the other team that did not lose any. So the difference in skill was huge. That loser team was also near to the last one we played. We were laughing about it. This was going to be a cake walk. Well, one guy who was tall had glasses this time, his skill was completely different. But it was more than that. By the end of the first quarter, they had a goal and we did not! We got serious, and had a real match on our hands. We won, but only in the last quarter! Everyone on our team told them how much better they were. They had gotten a lot stronger. Now, lets say a new team was formed. A team that had all the same skills as this one, right at that moment. They played a few games and won every one. So here they are a string of wins, and up against this team I talked about. 100% even, all the same skills. Looks like it would be a tie. What Ali is saying is that because the one team knew the struggle and growth caused by defeat, they will win. Even with matched skills, Ali think they will pull out that extra and get it done.
Oh, okay.
Think you could find something like that to talk about? Because from "I played soccer as a teen." to "...and get it done." is 268 words. So if you can do a short bit like that about video games, or something in your life, that is it. You would have more than 250 and an answer that is exactly what is needed.
Oh, I think I know what you mean now. I'm supposed to talk about something that reflects the Ali quote right? I think I'll use my example on video games.
Well, it relates tot he question: "Reflect on what the quotation says about power, life, relationships, or humanity. You might discuss how the quotation portrays power and how you see power. Reflect on what the quotation reminds you of, how it illuminates a problem with power that you have seen in the world, or how it relates to your experiences." Power can be shown as a strugle and competitiveness is part of life and humanity.
In mine, you can see how I talked about how the respect my team had for the other. That respect changed. I could easily adjust what I wrote to focus a little more on that respect and how their defeat and their reply to defeat earned our respect.
(sigh) okay, I think I know what I'll talk about. Thanks for the ideas and help. :) Fan me.
Hey, at least you have a direction to go. Write what you want, what you feel, and what you like that is some what related to the question. Get it out there! That will give you the bulk of it. Then, add a little or change a little to make it more in line with the question. Presto! Great answer appears.
Oh, wow, thanks so much for the ideas. You're such a great helper! Next time I need help, I'll tag you in! :D
