How did Copernicus's work challenge the accepted view of the universe?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Before Copernicus the universe was considered to be geocentric meaning the sun and planets revolved around the earth, this was also backed by the christian church. He stated that that was false and the planets revolved around the sun.

To expand, his new theory was 'heliocentric' rather than 'geocentric'. His theory actually remained initially uncontested by the Catholic Church for alomst 60 years, but was later denounced as heretical and his works were added to the official Church-issued list of banned books. In fact, it wasn't really until Galileo expanded on the Copernican theory of a heliocentric universe that the Church took official action against it. No one really knows why, but it may have to do with a less lenient Catholic hierarchy at the time and new, more substantial evidence to back it up.
