http://www.k6-geometric-shapes.com/image-files/formula-area-pentagon-2.jpg get the area for the whole pentagon THEN substract the area of the square off it

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Do you still remember the area of a regular polygon using the apothem? Apolygon = (perimeter) * (apothem)/2 A rectangle = L * W You need Shaded area = Apolygon - A rectangle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep! (I think.. lol.) Let me try it out, and i'll post my answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YEAH I DO. I just don't have an apothem this time, so it's a little harder.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The apothem is right on the figure: apothem length 5.51

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ganeshie8 can you give me an answer?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The area of a regular polygon is \(A = \dfrac{aP}{2} \) where A = area a = apothem length P = perimeter Here you are given that the apothem length is 5.51. The side is 8, so you can find the perimeter. Then find the area of a square with a side of 8. Finally, subtract the area of the square from the area of the pentagon.
