HELP!!! MEDAL WILL BE AWARDED!!!! In this lesson, you saw the vast differences in how World War II ended in the European and Pacific Theaters. Use this knowledge to explain the decision to use atomic bombs on Japan. For this assignment you will write three well-developed paragraphs on the following:

OpenStudy (falco276):

What were the reasons the bomb should have been used on Japan? What were the reasons the bomb should not have been used on Japan? Should the atomic bomb have been used on Japan? Why or why not? Support your claim with evidence from the lesson.

OpenStudy (falco276):

Information you should consider when writing your paragraphs: U.S. plans for invading the main Japanese islands U.S. bombing raids on Japanese cities during early 1945 the Japanese code of battle the number of U.S. dead in the Pacific War by 1945 the likelihood of Japan's surrender with the entry of the Soviet Union the number of Japanese civilians killed in the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki the level of destruction caused by atomic weapons the long-term effects of the use of atomic weapons Be sure to include key events and course terms in your responses.

Okay, what kind of help did you need with this? It looks like it has a lot of points to help you cover three paragraphs with.

OpenStudy (falco276):

Just confused with this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

About how to start it?

OpenStudy (falco276):

Well, um how bout this. Those three seem like questions to me and I don't know on how to start those kind of paragraphs. Sooo......

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ah, okay! Without even thinking of the other questions, it might help to just focus on the main one -- the decision to drop the bomb. In your mind, why did you think they needed to do something like that? That's the main point you need to support. The other Q's are just there to help you put together the facts you need to build up your paragraphs with. So, for example, if your first paragraph wanted to talk about how brutal the fighting was over Japanese-held strongholds, the first question can be covered by thinking about: -- how the Japanese fought; did they surrender often or fight to the death? -- mounting casualties of US soldiers -- the fear that the Soviets, on entering the war with Japan, might occupy Japanese islands in the same way they did with Eastern European countries Does that help? Or do you want me to keep going?

OpenStudy (falco276):

I really don't want you to do all the work for me, but keep going so that I can see what I can answer and put it together into a paragraph. Thanks! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No prob! I'm taking it step by step to just give you a few ideas so I'm glad to see that it's helping. :) The second paragraph can be the same way. This is where you can start talking about how all of those reasons you listed in the first paragraph led to Truman's decision. So now we're going from how tough the war was in the first paragraph to what Truman took them to mean for him and the country leading to his decision. The third paragraph can finally finish up with a conclusion summarizing everything together. But you can also talk about the unexpected side effects -- back then, no one knew anything about the effects the kind of radioactive fallout caused by the bombing resulted in. That's just a rough sketch of how your paper might go, but like always, it's totally up to you on how to write it and where you are going to take the reader with your words. :)

OpenStudy (falco276):

Oh, wow! Thanks so much! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're welcome! Good luck with your paper! :)
