Suppose that the weight (in pounds) of an airplane is a linear function of the total amount of fuel (in gallons) in its tank. When graphed, the function gives a line with a slope of 5.9 . With 47 gallons of fuel in its tank, the airplane has a weight of 2177.3 pounds. What is the weight of the plane with 81 gallons of fuel in its tank?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well write the equation in slope intercept form y = mx + b so let weight = w and fuel = f you know the slope so the equation is w = 5.9f + b to find the value of b, use the information w = 2177.3 when f = 47 so substituting you get 2177.3 = 5.9 x 47 + b solve for b. when you have the equation, substitute f = 81 to find the weight

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b= 1990?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

ummm I got 1900

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yeah got.. sorry:)

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

so the equation is w = 5.9f + 1900 just substitute f = 81 to find the weight

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 2377.9 ?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

yep... thats the answer I got

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you :)
