Help with trig? Match the right hand side to the left hand side of the equation. cot(x)*sec^4(x)=cot(x)+2tanx+tan^3(x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There's a good start.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would you mind if i uploaded a picture of my work and you helped me find my mistake? c:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I keep getting cot(x)+tan^3(x)=cot(x)+2tan(x)+tan^3(x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would advise against splitting sec4x into 1+tan4x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, give me a minute to try your work c: Thank you by the way

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here, I have a better suggestion. Try to make the right side match the left. It's easier

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, I honestly don't understand this. :c I feel like I'm missing something

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wow. that was so much easier than i thought it was...i was reducing to the smallest possible simplification! but it was much easier than that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do u still need help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Adri1580

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just got it, but thank you for offering c:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you want me to check to see if you wrote it correctly?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when u sent that picture, you assumed that the left hand side already equalled the right hand side. That is a big nono. always start from one side and try to reduce it and hopefully then it matches with the other side, which then you can say RHS=LHS

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The left hand side does equal the right hand side, the assignment is asking me to use the basic trig properties to prove that both sides are equal. I'm only suppose to alter one side, namely the left side. :o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea yea but at the start never assume that both sides are equal...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

always start with one side and then your simplification is ur proof

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

come to exam time, you will lose some marks because ur clarification is incorrect. just look for what the question wants you to answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you want me to show how you would answer it properly?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

most students set these type of problems incorrectly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you want I'll show you my new work and you tell whether or not its wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alrighty

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry that its messy >.<

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea good u could do it much easier, but with the last line you should write cotx+2tanx+(tanx)^3=RHS therefore LHS=RHS as required.
