PRECALCULUS VECTOR HELP ASAP!!!!!? Q: An airplane is flying on a compass heading(bearing) of 340 degrees art 325 mph. A wind is blowing with the bearing 320 degrees at 40 mph. (a) find the component form of the velocity of the airplane. (b) find the actual ground speed and direction of the plane.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look here at this explanation , i'm not getting the fact that they're saying the plane is in quadrant 4 when i thought bearaing was how far the angle was from due north clockwise http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090111212417AAzD67V

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

compass heading \(\leftarrow\) Where is \(0^{\circ}\) on a compass?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Or yah, that is your point. Hmmm...

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

They may have rotated it 90 degrees for the purpose of doing the problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

everyone keeps saying its in QIV but that makes no sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

even my textbook gives an answer like that but then again it has been wrong before

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Just because north is up on a map does not mean I can't turn the map 90 degrees clockwise and have nore point to the right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well thats confusing because no one can just assume that, thy would do it like they do before

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Ah, I forgot... the compass rose also goes the opposite direction!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah well whatever ill just call .

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

So the answer should be in Q2 on a Cartesian plane.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats what im using and guess what? the directionasl angle is also one used in a cartesian plane thats in the second quadrant, so what plane is this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its good the question is resolved thanks anyways i guess everyone is confused

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

I agree with you that it should be something like this for the angles: |dw:1373424615504:dw|
