The density of oak is .710 g/cm^3 and the density of pine is .373 g/cm^3. If you had a 1 kg block of each kind of wood, which block would be larger?

OpenStudy (theeric):

Density is mass per unit of volume. That is, how much mass is in each \(cm^3\) or whatever volume you use. Some materials are very dense, like cannonballs. Others are less dense, like cotton balls. Let's compare a more dense object with a less dense object. Picture the cannonball in your mind. You'd need a lot of cotton to have the same mass. Likewise, Picture a cotton ball in your mind. A piece of a cannonball would have to be much smaller to have the same mass. Now to your problem. Oak has a higher density than pine. Oak is high density, like a the cannonball. Pine is low density, like the cotton. Which will you need more of to get the same mass?

Pine & thanks for making it clear in practical application

OpenStudy (theeric):

Yeah! Thanks, and you're welcome!
