Which of the following relations is a function? A. (-2,-4/5),(-1,1),(0,0),(-1,1) B.(-2,0),(0,1/2),(0,3/4),(1,1) C.(-2,1),(-1,0),(0,1),(-2,2) D.(-2,4),(-1,1,(0,0),(1,1)

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Tell us....:) just like last time...which is it?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Just remember you cannot see (x,y) the (x) twice in the given points

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk their all different and see u r to a stalker :p

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

If you see an x-coordinate used more than once, then it's not a function.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i agree with john

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like for example A. (-2,-4/5),(-1,1),(0,0),(-1,1) ^ ^ so no :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm b??

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

lets look at C.(-2,1),(-1,0),(0,1),(-2,2) do you see an 'x' more than once?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

number 1

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Ohhhh I see.....what you're looking at is in (x,y) you are looking at the 'y' values ....no you look at the 'x' values....x cannot have more than 1 'y' so in that same C C.(-2,1),(-1,0),(0,1),(-2,2) notice that -2 appears twice in the 'x' part of (x,y)

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Because of this....it cannot be a function...get it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes soo my answer is b :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

B (-2,0),(0,1/2),(0,3/4),(1,1) ^ ^ so no cuzz of the 2 0s in the x position of the x,y coordinate

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Look at B B.(-2,0),(0,1/2),(0,3/4),(1,1) the (0) appears twice in the 'x' part of (x , y) right? so not right

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Can you list just the x-values for each choice? Here's the first one: A. -2, -1, 0, -1 Can you do the same for B., C., and D.?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i belive the answer is d

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You believe correctly.

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Okay...that is correct,...but do you see why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no becuz d has both a 1 in the x spot

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

notice one is a 1...and the other is a -1

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

D.(-2,4),(-1,1,(0,0),(1,1) The 'x' values are -2 , -1 , 0 , 1 Are any of these numbers the same? No..so it is correct

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

x values for each choice: A. -2, -1, 0, -1 ----> -1 appears twice. Not a function. B. -2, 0, 0, 1 ----> 0 appears twice. Not a function. C. -2, -1, 0, -2 ----> -2 appears twice. Not a function. D. -2, -1, 0, 1 ----> No number appears twice. This is the function.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OOOOOOOOO so the negitive seperates them

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Mmhmm...remember that 1...and negative 1 are two TOTALLY different numbers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahhhhh i c :p thanks my stalker

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

lol ugh never going to stop that are you...you're welcome :)
