OpenStudy (caitlinnr14):

−5|x + 1| = 10 x = 0 x = −3 and x = 1 x = −1 and x = 3 No solution

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

This is my favourite kind of absolute value problem :) Why don't you start by dividing everything by -5? ^_^

OpenStudy (caitlinnr14):

it would have to be -2 if u divide -5 from 10

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

That's right :) So we get |x + 1| = -2

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

So, you know absolute values are always greater than or equal to zero, right? :)

OpenStudy (caitlinnr14):

yes

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Well then, can it EVER be equal to a negative number? (such as in here, we have:) |x + 1| = -2

OpenStudy (caitlinnr14):

yes

OpenStudy (caitlinnr14):

wait no

OpenStudy (caitlinnr14):

it cannot

OpenStudy (caitlinnr14):

so there is no solution?
