check my answer? medal for best

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know its either C or D but I cant be sure of which

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

C and D have discriminants that are negative numbers remember if a discriminant is negative, then there are no real solutions (ie no x intercepts)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if a discriminant is positive, then there are 2 real solutions if a discriminant is zero, then there is exactly one real solution

OpenStudy (waheguru):

Yea, you will have one solution of x therefore one x intercept

OpenStudy (waheguru):

@jim_thompson5910 it would be the second one right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

correct

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the first one has 2 x-intercepts, so the discriminant is positive (and not zero)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh so if a discriminant is zero, then the parabola only touches x once, yes?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

exactly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay thanks!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
