Solve the following system of equations. 4x - 3y + z = -9 x + 2y + 2z = 5 x - 2y + 3z = -2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you have an idea where to start?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have two ways to solve them? elimination or substitution? and graphing? @soccergurl7991

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i would use substitution since there are already a lot of variables without coefficients

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you walk me though it? I have a lot of problems with it!;/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okey dokey. lemme work it out before i try to tell you something that may be wrong; in the meantime, do you have answer choices? and try solving for x in each of the last two equations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(1, 1, -10) (1, 2, -7) (-1, 2, 1) (-1, 1, 0)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i got it! have you made progress?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not really, ive got a lot more questions and im working on them too!:/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i hear you. im scanning the paper i worked out out on and then i can walk you through all the work i did :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

absolutely, happy to help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is my work

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

I suggest elimination. AKA manipulating each equation to cancel out variables you don't want.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THANKS SO SO SO SO MUCH!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ninashabrang, the first thing i did was write out each equation on top of each other and then i saw that in the bottom two equations, x didn't have a coefficient so i did as @marissalovescats said, just eliminated x from the bottom equation, leaving me with 4y-z=7 follow me so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ninashabrang, i want to make sure you know how to do this and are not just going straight for the answer...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah thanks im reading over it and rewriting t and explaining it to myself! hanks for showing all of your work!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your welcome! i tried to make it as easy to read as possible, but i tend to write in whatever space is available so it may be hard to follow the train of thought. im here if you have a question on what came first or whatever, so don't hesitate to ask! :)
