what is the difference between a 'contradiction' and a 'paradox'?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

a contradiction is a negation of a statement a paradox is not a negation, but results in conflicting results

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in a logical sense, if we assume P to be true and derive not P to be true, it is a contradiction, right? In that sense, what is a paradox? That is the question troubling me.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

proof by contradiction is to prove the assumption to be false. a paradox would be when the assumption is not proven false in an otherwise "if and only iff" statement.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

schroders cat comes to mind: place a cat in a box with an amount of poison; until proven otherwise, the cat is dead and alive at the same time .... a paradox

OpenStudy (amistre64):

paradox: "a statement that appears self contradictory or contrary to expectations" - from wolframalpha.com

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks! guess we cannot figure it out with only T and F, that is with binary logic :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i believe i read the fuzzy logic is more expansive
