OpenStudy (anonymous):

graph the equation using the x and y intercepts. x/5 - y/9=1

OpenStudy (mary.rojas):

start of solving for y

OpenStudy (mary.rojas):

can you do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no im confused as to what equation i would use

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would look like y = mx +b where m is the slope and b is the y intercept

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you want y all by itself

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i still do not understand

OpenStudy (mary.rojas):

did u watch the link video i sent you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you have x/5 - y/9=1, not try to rearrange that equation so that y is all by itself

OpenStudy (mary.rojas):

to find intercepts of x, plug in 0 for the y in the equation and solve for x. then to solve for the y intercept, plug in 0 for the x and solve for y. and then graph the x and y that you get

OpenStudy (mary.rojas):

|dw:1373747220051:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5

OpenStudy (mary.rojas):

|dw:1373747499913:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9

OpenStudy (mary.rojas):

is it 9 or -9. because it has a -y in the equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-9

OpenStudy (mary.rojas):

remember you have to get that -y to a positive y

OpenStudy (mary.rojas):

now graph your intercepts that you just found

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be (0,5) (9.0) or it that still incorrect

OpenStudy (mary.rojas):

you have 0,5 so you are saying that y equaled 5. But what did you get for y? 5 or -9 ?

OpenStudy (mary.rojas):

so it should be (5,0) and (0,-9).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am getting frustrated with trying to figure this out I am going to move on to the next question and come back. thanks for trying to help.

OpenStudy (mary.rojas):

what are you confused about. i may be able to help you

OpenStudy (mary.rojas):

remeber that (x,y). and when we solved the x- intercept we got x=5 so thats why it's (5,0). And when we solved the y intercept we got y= -9 so thats why its (0,-9).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its just very confusing to me but i do get it some.

OpenStudy (mary.rojas):

:/ maybe watch this: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/linear-equations-and-inequalitie/graphing_with_intercepts/v/x--and-y-intercepts if you haven't already or repost your question so others can see it. That video will show you how to solve these kinds of problems. Good luck and dont worry soon you will be an expert :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but it doesnt look correct when i graph it the 5,0 should be on the right of thr graph right

OpenStudy (mary.rojas):

yes because it is a positive 5
