What strategic resource did the Germans want to obtain through the seizure of Stalingrad?

Oil and food. Russia got a lot of it's oil from the area near Stalingrad and grew a lot of it's food in that region. By losing the battle of Stalingrad, and the followup battle of Kursk, Germany was going to lose WWII by running out of oil and food it could not get elsewhere.
