factors of the polynomial x^2+5x-14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To find the factors of the polynomial x^2+5x-14, you have to factor the equation first. Use crisscross method or the australian method to do this. Do you know how to do this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no :(

I cannot give you the answer right away due to the code of conduct. So the only way i can do this is to help you step by step.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you want to find two numbers when you add them it becomes +5 and when you multiply it becomes -14

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

Do you understand that explanation?

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

Pardon the name of the site but it explains it well... http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-factor-a-polynomial-expression.html The answer is (x+7)(x-2) But I don't want to give it to you without explaining it. Don't forget to fan and best the answers!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x+7)(x-2)

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

Exactly what I said @gupta101

hero (hero):

And here's the actual explanation for it: 1. Find two numbers that add to get 5, but multiply to get -14. In other words: a + b = 5 ab = -14 And you figure out that a = 7, b = -2 works for both. Then you perform the following steps: x^2+5x-14 x^2 + 7x - 2x -2*7 x(x + 7) -2(x + 7) (x + 7)(x - 2)

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

Well put hero.
