What number would you add to the equation below to complete the square? x^2+6x=23 Do I add 9 to both sides?

The point is to make part of it look like (x+3)^2 so that you can square root both sides to get the + and - roots.

Almost, you take half of 6 and square it, not square root it.

OpenStudy (kainui):

If you foil out (x+3)(x+3) you get x^2+3x+3x+9 right? the 2 comes from having 2*(3x) terms.
