What is the main difference between muscle cells and nerve cells?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here are some pretty substantial differences: 1. Nerve cells are INVOLUNTARY (you can't control nerve impulses) while muscle cells are VOLUNTARY (you can often control what your muscles do) 2. Muscle cells go through cell division easily and swiftly -- which is why when you exercise, your muscles grow back stronger within a few days. Nerve cells divide much less easily and are harder to repair -- which is why nerve damage, brain damage, or damage to the spinal chord is often permanent. 3. Muscle cells and nerve cells are shaped differently -- muscle cells are cylindrical and long, while nerve cells have dendrites, axons, etc. Hope that helps! :)
