OpenStudy (cherie_magee):

Haley's car gets at least 18 miles per gallon. If she plans a trip that is 200 miles, what is the minimum number of gallons she'll need? 11 12 13

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

200/18 = how much gas she will need

OpenStudy (cherie_magee):

11.11 so twelve huh @texaschic101

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

I am not sure if it would be 11 or 12.....I would probably say 12, but you might want to get a second opinion.Because 11.11 can round down.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not exactly. Your answer would actually be 11 because when rounding to the nearest whole number you look at 11.1 and because its teh number in the tenth possition is a 1 it would be 11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The best way to remember is 5 to 9 you round up and 1to 4 you round down

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

I am not sure if your supposed to round.....and .11 puts it over 11 gallons

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

@satellite73 .....take a peek at this...it is easy, just don't know if your supposed to round it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no because you can not use te second number. let me show you 11.11 round to the nearest tenth first to get 11.1 then round to the nearest whole number to get 11. since you only use the numbers 1 through 9 when yuo round 11 would have been to high of a number.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

it will put it just a little bit over 11 gallons....11/100 over 11 gallons

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

I know how to round....I know it rounds to 11 gallons

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

but it is still over 11 gallons so I don't know if it would be 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I under stand that but the rule of rounding would make it 11 not 12. the point was to get as close as you could to the nearest whole number and it is closeer to 11 than it is 12

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

@amistre64 .....am I making this harder then it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wiether it is over 11 gallons or not the number that you get is still closer to 11 than it is 12

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

thats true...it is closer to 11,but it is also more then 11

OpenStudy (amistre64):

how many times does 18 go into 200?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

11.11

OpenStudy (amistre64):

then rnd up to the nearest gallon and pay a fortune at the pump

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

but it is still more then 11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes you are. When you have a problem like this they want the closest whole number so since it is 11.11 you would not be close to 12

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

11/100 more, which is not much more

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But it is not enough to be 12

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if you get at least 18 ... then you have to assume that you only get 18 mpg worst case

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the maximum gallons you need to get would be 12 to cover 18 mpg

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

but your gonna be 11/100 short

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if you get 19 mpg you can get less

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if you get 20 mpg you can get even less

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

so it should be rounded to 11 for the minimum ?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i would say you need 1 to 12 gallons :) the question is poorly worded to start with

OpenStudy (cherie_magee):

how about we take this party to my other question lol but seriously

OpenStudy (amistre64):

"at least 18" means that it could possibly get 200 mpg in which case youd only need 1 gallon to make the trip

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

well...if she just gets 11 gallons, she is gonna get there on fumes...lol

OpenStudy (amistre64):

is say to assume the worst case and it gets only 18 mpg; then you would have to get 12 minimum

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

I am sticking with 12 gallons

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It says at least 18mpg so she could get more however since we don't have more information it makes the question harder. I see where y'all are coming ffrom when i reread the question. we would need to know more information to know exactly but I see where y'all get 12 from

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i agree, 12 would cover ALL the possible cases

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

I understand the rounding Kaylei....the question is a bit confusing

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

thanks amistre

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand that and it does make it difficult. I do agree with y'all after rereading it though
