Why did the Founding Fathers believe the Electoral College was necessary? They believed Congress deserved the power to choose the president. They believed the electors for each state needed more powerful support. They believed the popular vote should be good enough to make the choice. They believed Americans lacked the knowledge to choose the best candidate.

The congress isn't considered an elector. An elector is the representative for each state. Like for California they have 9,700,000 pop. so they won't have that many votes to cast, instead if a candidate wins that state over, there are only 54 electoral votes.
