What do you need to do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x + 3y = 15 2x - 5y = 27

system of equations

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Are you asked to use any specific method, or can you choose your own?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Let's use addition. Notice that the first equation has 4x and the second has 2x. If we multiply the entire second equation by -2, the x-term will become -4x. Then when we add the equations, the x-terms will cancel out. Rewrite the first equation followed by -2 times the second equation: \(~~~4x + ~~3y = ~~~15\) \(-4x + 10y = -54\) We add the equations: \(13y = -39\) \(y = -3\) Now substitute -3 for y in either of the original equations and solve for x.
