1. Where do you think the original mistake in chromosome structure occurred, and what type of mistake was it? Explain what probably went wrong, and when it probably happened( Narrow it down AMAP) This question is referring to a condition called cir du chat syndrome which is the deletion of part of the chromosome 5.

OpenStudy (caozeyuan):

Help me ASAP! this question is due tmr!

OpenStudy (caozeyuan):

2. the following is a real pedigree, And individual 1,2,4,5,7 are all normal in phenotype . Explain why this is or is not expected.

OpenStudy (caozeyuan):

3.Suppose a DIFFERENT family with an affected children comes to you for advice. The parents want to know if any future children are likely to be affected. What should you tell them?

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

Deletion occurs when chromosome when the genetic material is lost due to breakage. Essentially we have two copies of each chromosomes, this is why we homo sapiens have 23 pairs or simply (23 x 2) 46 chromosomes. When referring to a deletion, it most likely refers to the changes in the structures of one of the chromosomes in the affected area. CIR-DU-CHAT syndrome stems from the deletion of the short arm (p) of chromosome 5 (identified as 5p-). It is believed that chromosome 5 has a crucial role in growth and division of cells. Research and experiments are still underway investigating the causes and potential solution in the changes of chromosome 5. Changes in such area are link to many cancers just like what you mentioned - the cir-du-chat syndrome. Some other deletions, such as in the long arm of the chromosome is linked to acute myeloid leukemia (AML), where it is the long arm (long (q)) of the chromosome is changed and many other deletions exist with varying syndrome associated with it.

If a family came to me for an advise, I would refer them to a professional doctor specializing in genetics. I am still working on getting my degree.

OpenStudy (caozeyuan):

@nincompoop . Thanks for your answer. But for question 3 that's interesting but not accepted. It is a QUESTION! I am supposed to give REAL Suggestions rather than through the problem to somebody else

OpenStudy (caozeyuan):

BTW, you didn't answer Q.2 please help me on that.

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

#2 is incomplete

OpenStudy (caozeyuan):

omg! I forget! sorry, putting it up in a minute
