This should be easy, but I am having trouble...need to find subject of sentence....
also the verb that goes with it. Currently, 90% of the people in my neighborhood (have/has) cats. Can 90% be the subject ?
@whpalmer4 .....can you answer this english question....or maybe just look at it
@hartnn ....help
@primeralph ....can you help
I thought " of the people n my neighborhood " prep phrases
prep phrases cannot contain the subject
can a number, like 90% be a subject ?
Replace 90% with the phrase "the majority" and see if it works as a subject.
that would work....but I can't just stick majority in there. I can't change the sentence
What I'm saying is that "the people" is still the subject because you can replace 90% and still be talking about something similar. Can't do that with "the people".
90% is just a quantifier.
but isn't " of the people " a prep phrase ?
Many birds have died. Many can't be the subject.
I see that...many is an adj and birds is the sub.....but a prep phrase cannot contain the sub
@Preetha ...can you please help me
This is the part where I falter: the part where you say this can't do that and blah blah. I don't have the rules memorized because I don't even know what these things are called. I just know how to place them. Here, it's plural though.
thank you so much.....English is not my best subject
@hartnn ....pleeeeesssseeeeee help

isn't usually subject verb object? Currently, 90% of the people in my neighborhood (have/has) cats. 90% of people is Subjcet have cats is object. I THINK!
hmmm....I didn't look at it like that....I thought " of the people" was a prep phrase
I am just gonna put what you said.....thank you so much
It is lonely herein the English section...lol
prep phrase?
primeralph said " majority " of the people, and that would make sense, but I can't change the sentence
a prep phrase is just a prepositional phrase
and I do know that a prepositional phrase cannot contain the subject
Most of the pie in my fridge has been eaten. Easy to see the subject here. Same story to me.
is most the subject...because " of the pie "is a prep phrase
without the prep phrases, the sentence would read : most has been eaten
could the subject be 90% ?
I am just gonna put 90% of the people as the subject...I am spending too much time on this question...thank you everybody....
I will close this now
"90% have cats" is the essential framework of this sentence. Everything else is just decoration.
so 90% is the subject ?
I changed my mind, I put 90% as the subject, I just wrote it out , like this : Ninety percent (as the subject) have as the verb
i think people is subjcet
I turn this in when I go back to school.....in Aug......this is summer homework. It will be a long wait till I find out the correct answer :/
Again, 90% is the subject. Have is the verb. Cats is the direct object. Everything else is decoration. Currently is an adverb modifying have. "in my neighborhood" is a prepositional phrase modifying people "of the people" is a prepositional phrase modifying 90% there wouldn't be any argument if the sentence read "Currently, all of the people in my neighborhood have cats", would there? All have cats. I believe 90% is an atom here, but I could see someone arguing that 90 is an adjective modifying percent, despite the fact that "percent have cats" makes no sense as a sentence.
