How to write equation of lines given certain information

OpenStudy (lncognlto):

y = mx + c, where m is the gradient of the line, and c is the y value when x = 0.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

m = slope, c = y intercept I doubt they understand gradient at this stage:)

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

so the basic equation for a line is y=mx+b (I use b not c) m is slope, and b is the y intercept (the value of y when x=0) 1) if you are given two points (x_0,y_0), and (x_1,y_1) then you can find slope with this equation slope = m = (y_0-y_1)/(x_0-x_1) now we know what the slope is now use the either point to find the value of b by subbing in the x value and y value example: (2,2), (3,3) slope = m = (3-2)/(3-2) = 1 so we know m =1 y=mx+b ----> y=1x+b *use one of the points to find b, ill use (3,3) y=3,x=3 so 3=1*3+b so b = 0 our equation is y=1*x+0 or y=x 2) you are given a point and slope start from the line with *
