my ups battery is dead. Its lead acid battery. Now to make use of it can I fill with water into its cells.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

After complete charge for 12hrs its providing back up for only 5 minutes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no you cant .it is now dead you have to get new or replace dead cells of battery with new in the older cover

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok 5 min it means it is not completely dead

OpenStudy (festinger):

Not water. Lead acid batteries use sulphuric acid.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I viewed few videos in YouTube. those people filled battery with water.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

some of 6 cells are dead first you have to diagnose which r dead then replce them .i had this problem too now ups is fine

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is a special water like acid mostly we use rain water at regular period of time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this guy filled with water @Festinger.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not pure water isnt a conductor

OpenStudy (festinger):

Use distilled water. Don't use rainwater or tap water. You don't want the lead electrodes to corrode with the other ions. I mentioned sulphuric acid (dilute) as a precautive measure.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

rain water has dil.H2SO4 not ions

OpenStudy (anonymous):

rain water increases the density of electrolyte which is sulphuric acid needed 4 electrolysis in battery

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Festinger you are right. a special kind of liquid(probably dilute sulphuric acid) available in market. last year I had seen a bus driver filling his bus battery's with some liquid purchased from market.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes a special water same like rain water

OpenStudy (festinger):

Rainwater might contain H2SO4, but it also contains whatever pollutants in the area.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok im just giving an idea i dont know where he lives

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hey thank you very much friends. now im going to market to purchase that special(dilute sulphuric acid) liquid.

OpenStudy (festinger):

No, forget what I said. If it's like the first time, then use distilled water or de-ionised water. I thought you had an old lead-acid battery, in which i suggested sulphuric acid to help simulate the electrodes. But in most cases distilled or de-ionised water will work.
