Why might an author include geographical context that the characters are climbing “a gurgling Mount St. Helens” when stating that “the sky became covered in blackness.”
A. because the reader needs to know when it happened B. so that the reader can better understand why the sky might turn black C. so that the reader has a cultural context D. because the author can help the reader to guess the ending
It cannot be A or C because the question doesn't answer "when" and does not really say anything about the culture of the place. How does the story end? Does it have a "dark," or tragic, ending?
While s possible that the blackness of the sky could eventually come back to a dark ending, I wouldn't automatically assume that the author is helping the reader guess the ending. If it was stated in a very specific way and at a specific time, then it would be more probable that he is setting the mood for the ending. If you're reading something and this is a question for the reading, then take that into consideration; otherwise, I would say that the author is helping the reader understand why the sky is black.
