Which of the following points lie in the solution set to the following system of inequalities? y > -3x + 3 y > x + 2 (2, -5) (-2, 5) (2, 5) (-2, -5)

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

just substitute and check e.g. 1st ordered pair x = 2 y = -5 is -5 > -3*(2) + 3 yes or no if no, forget that point and go to the next

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

do you know how to substitute..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not too good at it.

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

ok... well it will make this question a bit difficult so the 1st ordered pair (2, -5) means x = 2 and y = -5 does that make sense...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah.

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

ok... so substitute them into y > -3x + 3 and you get -5 > -3(2) + 3 or after calculating -5 > -3 is that true or false.... is -5 larger than - 3...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

False.

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

ok... so that means the point (2, -5) isn't an answer repeat the process with the next ordered pair x = -2 y = 5 substituting 5 > -3(-2) + 3 or 5 > 9 is 5 greater than 9..

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

repeat the process until you get a point that is true for the 1st inequality. then check to see if its true for the 2nd inequality. if its true for both inequalities, then thats the answer

Alright, thanks.
