Manitoba has twice as many days of thunderstorms in a year as New Brunswick. Together, they have 39 days of thunderstorms. How many days of thunderstorms does New Brunswick have?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

If New Brunswick has x days of thunderstorms, how many does Manitoba have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't get it

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Lets say you have twice as much money as I have and I have 5 dollars. How much do you have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Yes. 2 times 5 is 10.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Lets say you have twice as much money as I have and I have x dollars. How much do you have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't get what x is suppost to be

OpenStudy (mertsj):

If I have x then you have 2x If I have 5 then you have 2(5) If I have 20 then you have 2(20) If I have 3y then you have 2(3y)

OpenStudy (mertsj):

That is what "twice as much" means...multiply by 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So then how do you solve the question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ples help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x is equaled to the days of thunderstorms 2x+x=39 3x=39 x=13 x is considered as the amount of day that New Brunswick receives thunderstorms. Since Manitoba has twice as many thunderstorms as New Brunswick, you would put it as 2x. The amount added together equals 39, so 2x+x equals 39
