Choose the equation of the line passing through the point (1, -5) and parallel to y = 2x + 4 y = -2x + 7 y = 2x - 3 y = 2x - 7 y = -2x + 3

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

to be parallel it needs to have the same slope, so slope = 2, you can cancel 1 and 4 choices

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Parallel means same slope, so use 2. Now plug this and the points given into the point-slope formula

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

now use formula y = mx + b, find value of b, by plugging m = 2 x=1 and y = -5

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

@ivettef365 easier to use point-slope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wouldnt it be y = 2x - 3

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

how did you get to that answer ??

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

-5 = 2(1) + b solve for b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its y = 2x - 7 ?

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

correct

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

There you go. @ivettef365 how did you come up with that method?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you ;)
