can anybody help me please question is find the first quartile and the third quartile of the data set 55,62,61,54,68,72,59,61,70

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

[55,62,61,54,68,72,59,61,70] To find the first quartile, and the third quartile, list from least to greatest. Would you mind doing that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its ok ,one min

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

If you didn't know: The first quartile represent the 25% of the data set. The third quartile represent the 75% of the data set.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

54,55,61,61,62,68,70,72

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Alright. I hope this is correct. Now, what's the median of that data set?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you add both 61 and 62 to find the median?

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Lol, no. You just look for the middle number in the data set. That's why I put the data set from least to greatest. ;)

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Oh wait. It's even, so yes. You add 61 and 62, and divide it by 2. >_>

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

So what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

61.5

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Great! |dw:1374637122676:dw|

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

So we split the data set into 2 data set. Now what's the middle number of each data set?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

61.5

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

We have data set [54, 55, 61, 61] What's the median in that data set?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

58

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Alright. What about data set [62, 68, 70, 72] What is the median?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

69

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Ooh. Okay. So 58 represent the first quartile, while 69 represetn the third quartile. Make sense, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

We split half the data set, and find the median of the data set to get the 25%, and the 75%.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok but what would the answer be ?

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

o.O I told you. First quartile = 58 Third Quartile = 69

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok sorry thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

could you help me with something else please
