Determine whether the formula describes y as a function of x. Explain your reasoning. y = -x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Tell us what you think @lornbeach

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

do you know what the vertical line test is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well this graph would be a normal diagonal line through the origin but reversed |dw:1374693361322:dw| The vertical line test basically means if you put a vertical lien through the graphed line does it hit the graphed one in more then one spot...lets try it |dw:1374693429900:dw| as you see it wont so...the formula in fact describes y as a function of x

OpenStudy (radar):

y = mx + b y= -1x + 0 Looks like a line with a slope of -1 and intercept at 0......Yes it is a function.

OpenStudy (radar):

Reasoning is that for any value of x, there is only one y value.

OpenStudy (radar):

I think I need to reword that, for a value of x, there is only one value of y.

OpenStudy (radar):

When graphed as hilterboy has show a vertical line will intersect at only one point.
