How do you figure this out?

Question

OpenStudy (phi):

you can do it in steps: remember a straight line is 180º , so you can find the angle next to the 145º, which is inside the triangle. Can you do that ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes wouldn't that equal 35º ?

OpenStudy (phi):

now you know 2 angles out of 3 in the triangle next step what is the 3rd angle ? use sum of angles in a triangle = 180º

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do I add up all angles to equal 180 degrees?

OpenStudy (phi):

you write 35 + 120 + y = 180 where y is the 3rd (unknown) angle can you find y ? first simplify 35+120 = 155 155 + y = 180 add -155 to both sides to find y

OpenStudy (phi):

or you could count on your fingers how many degrees do you add to 155 to get to 180 ?

OpenStudy (phi):

the last step is that the 3rd angle (called y up above) plus x is a straight line so y + x = 180 once you know what y is, you can find x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait .-. what? im so confused I got y = 35 degrees?

OpenStudy (phi):

system is back... let's check y= 35 35 + 120 + y = 180 35 + 120 + 35 = 190 which is 10 too big. try y= 25 degrees now you have the angle next to x. 25 + x = 180 (a straight line) can you find x ?

OpenStudy (phi):

another way is to know angle x is an "exterior angle" the exterior angle = the sum of the opposite interior angles so x= 35+120 = 155 notice that 25+x= 180 and 25+155= 180, as a check

Oh alright :) thank you
