x2 + 14x +___

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Whatever you want it to be!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Complete the trinomial so that it is a perfect square.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/2b^2

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

No, @FutureMathProfessor . You still haven't fixed your notation problems. Please remember your Order of Operations. \(\left(\dfrac{b}{2}\right)^{2}\) with b = 14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you realize 20 years ago people would laugh at you if you brought up "order of operations"

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Just like today. Those who fail to learn Order of Operations also fail to communicate clearly. It is NOT optional!

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

BTW @FutureMathProfessor What were you doing 20 years ago?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They didn't even exist 20 years ago! lmao

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

You are very, VERY incorrect. 20 years ago, we were definitely teaching clear communication. Order of Operations was one such idea that aided us in accomplishing this lofty goal. Also 40 years ago.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There were no such thing as order of operations in mathematics..you went from left to right. Obviously you weren't alive then!

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Really? You're going to go with that? Let's walk over to the shelf and see what we can find... Ah, here's one. Modern Algebra, Book 1, Structure and Method Authors: Dolciani, Berman, Freilich First Published in 1962 and again in 1965 Page 23 Section 1-9 Order of Operations "Parentheses and other symbols of inclusion are the customary means used to make clear the meaning of numerical expressions. However, mathematicians have agreed on a rule to fall back on if someone omits punctuation marks. This rule gives order to be followed in performing the operations indicated in the expression." Examples are then given. The essentials of PEMDAS are then explained (although lacking exponentiation), thus the term "PEMDAS" is not actually used. By my calculation 2013-1962 = 51 > 20 Seriously, @FutureMathProfessor, if you are ever to require students to do homework, you really should do yours, first.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Don't give me a book that you wrote and think that that's customary for the time..lmao

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Okay, a minute ago I wasn't yet born 20 years ago and now I wrote a book in 1962?! You really should make up your mind. However, I accept your challenge. Let's walk over the that shelf, again... Ah, another one. College Algebra, 3rd Edition Author: Richardson First Published in 1947, then 1958, and then 1966 (PRENTICE-HALL) Page 74 - Section 2 (just below the middle of the page) Order of Operations "Parentheses (), brackets [], Braces {} and sometimes the vinculum \(\overline{\;\;\;}\) are used to group together the quantities enclosed by them. Operations within parentheses (or other symbols of grouping) are to be done first...." "We agree that powers take precedence over multiplications and divisions, which in turn precede additions and subtractions, except where otherwise indicated by parentheses." Again, 2013 - 1947 = 66 Are you SURE you want to continue to believe the utterly incorrect ideas you seem to be holding?
