HELP??

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Have you done least squares regression line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes but a while ago, sorry

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Here's a refresher. http://easycalculation.com/analytical/learn-least-square-regression.php If you post your answer, I can help you check it. There is a lot of numerical calculations involved, so be very organized when you do your calculations. The given problem is quite long (12 data points). However, be very careful and make sure you plot your points in case there are outliers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so when they say find x,y * x^2 do u just multiply the x's and y's for XY?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Yes, for each data point.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so what do I exactly do after finding XY and each x^2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cuz im really confused there :(

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Next step is to find N, \( \sum x,\sum y, \sum x^2, \sum xy \) as shown in step 3 of the reference.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what?? how do I multiply by the "sigma" symbol??

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Sigma means sum. \( \Sigma x \) means you add up all values of x (in your case there are 12 of them). Similarly, \( \Sigma xy \) means you add up the products xy of each and every data point, and so on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im so confused, because im really bad w/ the sigma and summation notation things :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how would I do that?????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when u say add up all values of x do I add up the all the values after I did XY?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Look at the reference link, step 2. THere is a table. The heading that says X has 5 values (60,61,62,63,65). \( \Sigma x \) means add all those numbers in column X, or as you can see in step 3: \( \Sigma x \) = 60+61+62+63+65 = 311

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh so just add up all the x values given then. in this case add 3 + 6+9+... right?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Yes, for \( \Sigma x \)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so that would be x= 168 & y= 336

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do the same for XY and x^2? add all of them up?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so for XY= 5713 & x^2= 2888

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im sorry Ive spent too much time on this problem already!!!

OpenStudy (mathmate):

You are the master of your own time and priorities. I will do my best to help you and, as you said, understand the problem and how to get the solution. That being said, if you have done all that, the most tedious part is done. Now follow steps 5 and 6 and get your answers in a jiffy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which is... Intercept(a) = (ΣY - b(ΣX)) / N ???? :( :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so ΣY= 336 336-b(168) / 12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that right???????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do I solve that though? I mean we're looking for B!!

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Sorry, you'd have to find b first using step 4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((:( :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Slope(b) = (NΣXY - (ΣX)(ΣY)) / (NΣX2 - (ΣX)2) :( :( this would be: 12*5713 - (168)(336) / 12*(2888 - (168)^2 ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

AM I RIGHT?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

N=12 \( \Sigma x =168\) \( \Sigma y = 336\) are correct. What did you get for \( \Sigma xy\)?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

What are your final values of a and b?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

as a final I got: 12108 / 6432 and answer: 1.882.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

step 4 would be MY FINAL STEP RIGHT? because I just need to find b???

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Yes, 1.882 is correct. It might read 1.88246...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok to the hundredths would be 1.88

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Yes, now you can proceed to find a, which is required in step 5.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank u... :( unfortunately I had to spend an HOUR on this.. but thank u

OpenStudy (mathmate):

b is required in step 5 to find a.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A??? why do I need to find a?? it says to find the slope!

OpenStudy (mathmate):

True! My bad.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one more thing:

OpenStudy (mathmate):

yes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Two dice are rolled. What is the probability of the event that you roll a total of seven OR eleven on the two dice? Reduce fractions to lowest terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know that out of 36, the probability of rolling a 7 is SIX OUT OF THIRTY-SIX??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its out of 36 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and a probability of a total sum of 11 is only TWO

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is it 6/36 + 2/36 ?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Rolling two dice gives 36 outcomes, out of which we get {16,25,34,43,52,61,65,56} which are the only ones to satisfy the requirements for "success". I'll leave that to you to figure out the answer, ok?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whered u get 16...25...34..

OpenStudy (mathmate):

1+6=7, 2+5=7,.... All possible ways to get the right sum.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea but I have a 6X6 table of outcomes to make it easier....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@vinnv226

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the final answer 8/36? which becomes 5/18 ??
