what value of x would the quotient (2x^2 + 3x - 4) ÷ (x + 4) not make sense?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Surely, when divisor is zero? :) The divisor is x + 4, so for what value of x would this be equal to zero?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think so in order for the (2x^2 + 3x - 4) to make since right ?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Wait what? LOL I just asked you for what value of x would the divisor (x + 4) be equal to zero :P x + 4 = 0 solve for x...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol oh -4

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

mhmm... so when x = -4, then the divisor becomes (-4 + 4) which is zero... and you know you can't divide by zero ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea so is x=-4

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

That's it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok do i do the same process each time for questions like this

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Pretty much... If you're asked for what values of x would the division not make sense, always check for values of x which would make the denominator equal to zero... :)

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

^Because dividing by zero... doesn't make sense LOL

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok Thanks So much !
