I need help understanding the triangle inequality. Especially using algebra to prove it. Can someone explain it to me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The triangle inequality simply states that the shortest path between any two points is a straight line :-)

the third leg of any triangle must be less than or equal to the sum of the other 2 legs. otherwise, it's not a triangle. thta's where it originates from.
