When Douglass writes, “You have seen how a man was made a slave; you shall see how a slave was made a man” , what does he understand a man to be? I've read the passage over and over again but can't seem to figure out what he believes a man to be.

I presume that a slave is made to be a man by all of the hard work and horrible things he has had to tolerate. That is all I can really infer from that passage. I hope this helped you out!

I thought that too at first but that's not what the question is asking. What does Douglass believe a man to be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In that case, he concludes a man to be very hardworking and tolerant.
