Consider the function y = -2 - 3cos(x + π) . What effect does the π have on the basic graph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. Horizontal shift left π units B. Vertical stretch by factor π C. Horizontal shift right π units D. Vertical shift down π units

It looks like it shifted down when I look at the graph... http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=y+%3D+-2+-+3cos%28x+%2B+π%29

OpenStudy (mertsj):

The -2 is the vertical shift The 3 is the amplitude The pi is the horizontal shift. If it is positive it is a shift to the left. If it is negative, it is a shift to the right.

A. Horizontal shift left π units

OpenStudy (mertsj):

yep

By any chance do you know the minimum value of y = sin x?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Are you familiar with the unit circle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Remember the sin is like y. What is the minimum y value on the unit circle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is it -1?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

yes.
