Find tan Θ if sin Θ 1/4 and falls in Quadrant 1.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok so you have two clues here. Let's start with the sine value. What sides of a triangle is sine the ratio of?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk. all i know is how to set up the problem and thats sin^2Θ+cos^2Θ=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No not really.... Have you ever heard of SOH CAH TOA?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But using that forumla is how i'm supposed to solve it...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well it's a long way to go about it but ok. So if sin theta = 1/ 4 what is sine squared?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good so now substitute that value into the Pyth. Identity and solve for Cos squared...What do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cos^2Θ=15/16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep so that means there are two possible values for cos theta... what are those possibilities?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the square root of 15/16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well what is that when it is in proper form?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and not quite because there are 2 possible values
