A teacher polled her elementary school class to see what each student's favorite food was: Pizza 5 Pasta 7 Cheeseburgers 3 Peanut Butter 2 Chicken 1 Hot dogs 5 Does the relation's inverse represent a function? Why or why not?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 can you help me pls????

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

how far did you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well i was thinking that the inverse represents a function but im not for sure

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

first off, is this relation a function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would you determine that

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if there is one input that produces more than one output, then it's not a function

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

use that bit of info to determine if it's a function or not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 not a input? im confused

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

think about it like this: if you input the word "pizza" into the relation, you get the number 5 as the output this happens for every food item is there a case where you get more than one output?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

where do you see more than one output

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hotdogs and pizza

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but is there a case where inputting "hotdogs" gives you more than one number as an output (ignore pizza for now)
