How do i simplify -3^-2 without a calculator?

OpenStudy (psymon):

Well, when you have a negative exponent, that means you can move it to the denominator and make it a positve exponent: \[-(3)^{-2} = -\frac{ 1 }{ 3^{2} }\] Also notice how I left that negative out. It needs to be out and not squared. So you should get it from there.

So the answer will be -1/6?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

\(\bf 3^2 = 6?\) didn't know that

OpenStudy (psymon):

Nope, 3^2 means 3*3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (psymon):

There ya go.
