For a triangle with sides a = 418 and b = 222, side c must be less than what length?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do I do a^2 + b^2

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

so as you can see if we grab "a" and "b" and arrange them like so what will be the longest "c" can get? "c" will be the longest if we flatten out the triangle, that is, if we lay "a" and "b" sides on flat, like |dw:1375815943186:dw|

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

if we keep on laying "a" and "b" flat what will be the side of "c"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH WOW 640

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

for you to have a triangle, "a" and "b" cannot lay flat, there has to be a tiny bitty little room of an angle to make the triangle and draw "c" there THAT VALUE will be less than a+b, by a tiny bitty amount thus "c" will be less than a+b, it cannot exceed or even reach a+b, just less by a bit
