factor: see below:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[144h ^{2}-169z ^{2}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the easiest way to find out what the square of 144 and 169 is?????How do I go about finding the square of a number???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can use a calculator, but it's pretty much memorization in my opinion... so what number when multiplied by itself gets 144?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and what number times itself gets 169?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

once you figure that out, then there you go! you've found the square of a number :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

example: factor 16. 4 x 4=16, so the square of 16 is 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12 and 13.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so every time the answer has a positive and negative??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm just trying to figure this out :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[81y ^{2}+x ^{2}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does the answer still have a negative and positive if the problem is postive?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not necessarily. it depends on the problem... sorry, i have to go, but i think @jim_thompson5910 could explain it better:) @jim_thompson5910, if u have time can u please help explain? :D

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you can't factor a sum of squares if the GCF is 1
