OpenStudy (goformit100):

Solve following easy but tricky Mathematical Question :- 6 / 2(1+2)

OpenStudy (mary.rojas):

wow this is a toughy

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

needs more brackets

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1?

OpenStudy (mandre):

9

OpenStudy (kainui):

I hate idiot things like these.

OpenStudy (mandre):

goformit should know better. I will volunteer to give her a spanking.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Answers depend on how one sees the brackets!!

OpenStudy (mary.rojas):

@Mandre really..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

goformit100 is a He....He tries to trick one and all!!

OpenStudy (mandre):

Tough job but someone's gotta do it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Be aware of this trap!!

OpenStudy (kainui):

@Mandre Yeah totally you spank while I hold 'em down.

OpenStudy (mandre):

There's a rumour going around that it's a man in drag. I'll pass.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@cambrige The brackets can only be seen one way :) add things between brackets first: 6/2*3. Then, multiplication before division.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Shudn't it be Div bfore Multipl??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@TimSmit

OpenStudy (mandre):

I figured they are equal so we work from left to right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ah wait didnt they change the rules for this recently? Quite annoying...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They are indeed both equal so left to right, you're correct mandre

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They changed the rules....-_^.....Really??......=_=,....Ha ha ....!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They did though. When I was at school, it was this strict order: exponents, multiplication, division, roots, addition, subtraction.

OpenStudy (mandre):

I plugged it into Excel 2010 and with it being one fo the latest spreadsheets I figured it would follow the correct precedence. Excel agrees with me.

OpenStudy (mandre):

=6/2*(1+2) in Excel gives 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, multiplication and division are at the same level now, so its left to right then, just like programming languages do.

OpenStudy (mandre):

She didn't forget. She's trying to trick us

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Writing it like 6/2*(2+1) is defined according to the rules of order of operations. You wouldn't use this way outside of a numerical environment of course :)

OpenStudy (mandre):

I see a she so it's a she until she sees fit to pronounce otherwise.

OpenStudy (mandre):

the varmint

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@TimSmit i really don't think they 'changed rules'...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@oldrin.bataku Well until the end of the 20th century quite some math books for primary and secondary schools used the order I stated, that is what was still in my mind :) Of course mathematics dont change, but that was the order taught at that time.
