How to use Ax+By=c What do the different variables stand for? My question is "Find the missing coefficient for Ax+y=3; 2,-5 As far as I can figure plugging in the variables they give me gives me A2+-5=3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So that means the missing coefficient is A?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does this support your statement? http://mjgds-math.wikispaces.com/file/view/variable-constant.gif/99852783/variable-constant.gif

I'm not particularly sure that doesn't seem to answer the question How do you solve for A in A*2+(-5)=3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You changed the equation just now...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ax+y=3; 2,-5 A2+(-5)=3 which is the same as A*2?(-5)=3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is it this one? \[a^2 +(-5) = 3\] OR? \[(a \times2) + (-5) = 3\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

second one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It would probably be better to write it as \["2a"\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ah sorry the equation the book gives me is as follows Ax+y=3;2,-5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so this should be pretty simple... \[2a - 5 = 3\] add five to both sides\[2a = 8\]now divide both sides by 2! \[a = ?\]

4! Thanks!

No problem! :D
