Carbon dioxide is a substance made up of atoms of carbon and oxygen in fixed ratios. Carbon dioxide is
Di - two oxide - oxygen carbon dioxide is carbon-two-carbon, or CO2 Dihydrogen monoxide is simply water, or H2O, though no one calls it dihydrogen monoxide
Carbon dioxide is a molecule.
Hi! I think @Festinger meant something else by, "carbon dioxide is carbon-two-carbon, or CO2." I think he meant, "carbon dioxide is carbon-two-oxygen, or CO2." Molecules are usually given names that reflect what they are composed of. In the future, the chemistry section might have people more qualified to help with questions like these. After a little bit, the naming methods still make sense, but are a little more complicated.
Just for fun: \(\sf CO_2\) \(\sf H_2O\) \(\huge\color{#33DD55}{\large\ \ o\ o\ \\\smile}\)
