Which of the following would most likely happen if the epithelial cells in the stomach failed to produce mucus?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

what does the mucus on your stomach lining protect the epithelial cells from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Acid I think

OpenStudy (aaronq):

yep, thats right. Hydrochloric acid (to be specific). what do you think would happen to your stomach cells if you didn't have the protection of the viscous mucus?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The cells would die from being attacked by acid??

OpenStudy (aaronq):

yeah exactly, it's what an ulcer is, a hole in your stomach, literally.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok so if the our stomachs didnt produce acid then gastric juice would consume the lining resulting in the hole... ulcer right???

OpenStudy (aaronq):

produce mucus, you mean. The mucus protects the cells against the acid (the acid is part of "gastric juice")

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea my bad I meant mucus...

OpenStudy (aaronq):

no worries, but yeah, thats it. good luck
