How do I create and maintain good study habits?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Keep a clean space with all your supplies, and a set time. Try keeping a drink and snack at your desk as well, because when it comes to studying I always use hunger as an excuse to get up. Try putting up some time of grade report with the grades circled in one color, and the grade you want for that class written big and bright right in front off your desk - this makes for great motivation!

Thank you (: It sounds like something that'll work for me. Unfortunately, motivation and focus are the things that I need work on. Your ideas will certainly help with those things! (: You're awesome!

I don't know if you are in middle school or high school or college, but putting up pictures of things I'd like to own or schools I want to go to is also a big motivation for me. Hope this helps!

Thank you! (: I'll get on it.

What really helped me, is developing a (loose) schedule for homework. For example, my most recent math class gave around 10-15 hours of homework a week due every Wednesday. So I would try to get started on Thursday, but the amount I got done wasn't that important. Friday I would take off, and Saturday and Sunday I would spend about 4-5 hours working on it each day. On a good weekend that would still leave me with plenty of free time, and only homework from other classes on Monday and Tuesday. As for developing this schedule, it really helps that it was regular homework. It's much more difficult to have a set schedule for homework. Additionally, if other classes have very irregular homework schedules, that can also upset the balance. Also, @gabriellerenee brought up a good point about food and water. Make sure to have a water bottle nearby, and if you're constantly getting up for a snack, bring it closer. Just be careful you don't start eating too much. Alternatively, make the food harder to get so you don't get up quite so much.

One of the tings a lot of people ignore is what we have learned about how to remember things. Back when Plato was developing things, there was the idea of Aris Memorae, or the Art of Memory. Once Gutenberg came along and started pressing out books by the dozen, this started to fade. By 100 years ago, the ideas of memory tools had been renamed to memory tricks and was sneered at... even though it exists in every nursery rhyme and is used by many to learn. A very good source of information on how to study better is in the book "Memory Power 101" by W.R. Kemm. Dr. Klemm is a neuroscientist and veterinarian, two of the harder degrees to get. Well, he used "memory tricks" to get these. He used them in teaching for years and has fine tuned tools for studying better that have been tested by his students over the years. So this is not just the claim of some guy, but a well developed set of methods by someone who is in the human brain business and has applied the scientific method to helping find the most effective ways to study. Finally, when it comes to motivation, why not try and develop a long term goal? For example, why is biology or geology good for a computer scientist to learn? First, all sciences are developed through the scientific method. So by learning how to apply the method of research in different fields, it helps to develop research skills. Those skills are beneficial to the computer scientist, therefore they gain from learning these "unrelated" fields! Next, it is good for anyone to learn about the world around them. As you can see, there are ways to dig into topics and relate them to different things. By doing so, you can sit there and say, "My long term goal is this! So, how will this help me get there?" Good GPA? Making a challenge for when things are not always what you want? Basic skills? Everything has something you can take away, so make sure to find it! In doing so, you learn the topic deeper and might find something you enjoy!
